Established in 1994 at the heart of the Strasbourg's University Hospitals, the IRCAD (Research Institute against Digestive Cancer) pools cancer-fighting research laboratories and a training centre in minimally invasive surgery.

Nowadays, the IRCAD is acknowledged worldwide as the reference centre in minimally invasive surgery and welcomes in Strasbourg over 3.700 surgeons from around the world each year.

The increase in IRCAD's activities makes an extension of its facilities necessary.

It is within this context that the President and founder of the IRCAD, Professor Jacques MARESCAUX, appealed to Strasbourg mayor, Mr. Roland RIES, on the 14th of October 2008 to study the feasibility of a conversion project of the National Stud Farm, within the framework of an emphyteutic lease.
The site's redevelopment project of that site is built around three major axes:
  • Welcoming innovative medical and surgical companies in order to create a "bio cluster", as a logical extension of the dynamic developed conjointly between IRCAD and the Competitivity Cluster "Therapeutic Innovations" - Alsace BioValley ;
  • Developing a hotel dedicated to lodging foreign industrialists, physicians and surgeons attending the training courses, while also welcoming the general public ;
  • Developing a restaurant under the supervision of the prestigious 3-star chef Marc HAEBERLIN from the Auberge de l'Ill (Illhaeusern).

The advantages of the project for Alsace are manifold:
  • ensure that the City of Strasbourg remains the owner of an exceptional building without having to pay for an expensive renovation ;
  • ensure that the IRCAD benefits an extension for its research activities and training sessions ;
  • guarantee economic development thanks to the direct creation of 130 employments ;
  • give the greater public access to a magical site and its heritage, those having remained secret for too long ;
  • welcome in Strasbourg an eminent name of international gastronomy, Marc HAEBERLIN, whose fame will benefit the entire project.
