World Summit Award 2003

The World Summit Award was given to IRCAD (Research Institute for Cancer of the Digestive System) in the e-health category on Wednesday 10th December, during the World Summit on the Information Society organised in the framework of the United Nations. It rewards the Argonaute 3D project developed by IRCAD in partnership with France Télécom.

Argonaute 3D is an experimental application that enables medical professionals - general practitioner, radiologist, surgeon - at different locations to share and work together in realtime using a 3D image that reconstitutes a patient's clinical data from MRI or CT scans. This analysis allows specialists and referring physicians to determine together the optimal time and strategy for a surgical intervention. Argonaute 3D enables inputs from specialists anywhere in the world as long as they have a broadband DSL link to the Internet.
Argonaute 3D is a totally secure platform, thus guaranteeing complete confidentiality of medical records.
This award was given to IRCAD after a jury had gathered in Dubai last October to examine 800 projects from 136 participating countries. The World Summit Award is a global 3 year project, which seeks to demonstrate concrete benefits of the Information Society in terms of the new qualities in e-content and innovative applications, by selecting, presenting and promoting the best products from all over the world and placing an overall emphasis on closing the content gap.
The World Summit Award was under the high patronage of Mr. Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel, Federal Chancellor of Austria, Mr. Ion Iliescu, President of Romania, de Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, President of Senegal.

The prize was delivered to Professor Marescaux by Professor Richard Satava, Colonel Surgeon of the American Army, who highlighted IRCAD's outstanding accomplishments for more than 10 years.
The IRCAD was all the more honored to receive this award as it is usually granted to American surgeons.

American Society of Anesthesiologists Award 2003

The American Society of Anesthesiologists is an educational, research and scientific association of physicians organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve the care of the patient.

Our participation at the 2003 annual session of the ASA was awarded exceptional merit.
This software, called Virtual Model for Navigation in the Upper Airway as a Teaching Tool for Fiberoptic Intubation was developed by the Applied Research Department of IRCAD.
The exhibit was qualified outstanding, and a distinct contribution to the science and progress of anaesthesiology.

On June 20, 2002, the IRCAD was granted the Bullukian Foundation Award by Claude Allegre, Honorary President. This prize was awarded at the end of the "Hospital and Technological Innovation, the model of imaging studies" symposium, organized for the bicentennary of the Lyon Hospices Civils' creation. This prize represents the most important endowment for surgical research worldwide. It honors the IRCAD's achievements and it is promising for the future.
In 2002, the Bullukian Foundation decided to create a prize for surgical research, the Bullukian Foundation Award, granted bi-anually. This prize follows the tradition of Napoleon Bullukian, who devoted part of his fortune to help his fellow citizens, to encourage the young artists and to raise funds for medical research.

ComputerWorld Honors Award 2002

Professor Jacques Marescaux has been awarded his second Computerworld Honors Program Award in the medicine category on June 3rd 2002 in Washington D.C. This recognition paid tribute to the research works of IRCAD/EITS on a project that has been carried out in partnership with France Telecom and Computer Motion.
Less than a year after the Lindbergh Operation, which for the first time in surgical history and thanks to the engineers of our partners was able to master transmission delays linked to distance, IRCAD/EITS has received an award from one of the most prestigious American institutions : the Computerworld Honors Award.

One thousand projects had been submitted, coming from 35 countries. 312 files were selected and finally only 7 finalists were lined up in the medicine category, including EITS/IRCAD, led by Prof. Marescaux, the only European candidate to be honoured.
Finalists were selected by a jury of renowned experts on such varied criteria as the impact on society, the importance of information technology, novelty of the research, success and encountered difficulties.
