A simple double click on its office icon starts VR-Render.
The VR-Render window then appears (see next image). It is composed of two main areas: the upper area is the “image selector”, the lower area is the “image visualization” window. The “image selector” window can be hidden by using the F12 shortcut or by clicking on “Hide patient information” in the Window menu.
The selection of “New Patients” in the “File” menu starts the DICOM folder selection process allowing to read medical images in DICOM format in the selected folder. This DICOM reader is the latest ITK version used by a large set of medical software applications.
It is also possible to use other image readers by using the “Import Patient” menu (see next image). It opens a reader selector including three different older DICOM readers (itk, ircad, Vtk/gdcm), an itk InrImage reader, an itk Jpeg reader, and itk Vtkimage and the FwXML format developed by IRCAD. The DICOM format requires a FOLDER selection and other formats require a File selection. However, if you select the InrImage reader, you will then have to choose between different kinds of reading techniques. The first one is a file selection which means that only one selected file will be added in the image list. The second one is a single directory selection which means that all InrImages contained in the selected directory will be added in the image list. The last one is a recursive directory selection, which means that all InrImages contained in the selected directory and sub-directories will be added in the image.
The last format, called fwXML, has been developed by IRCAD and is dedicated to VR-Render. It contains a list of images already selected with VR-Render and saved through VR-Render. Thanks to this specific format, it is thus possible to create an image list of work and to save this list in order to save time during a future reading. It can also incorporate the 3D modeling of a patient done from their medical image with VR-Anat, a 3D modeling software developed by IRCAD. If you select the fwXML reader, you will then have to choose directly an .XML file in a file selector. You can also select a .fxz file that corresponds to a compressed version of the FwXML format. It is here important to notice that the fxz format is used in our 3D gallery.
After selection, the image list (according to the selected reader) contained in the selected folder then appears in the “Image Selector” window. At the same time, the first image of this list is automatically visualized in the “Image Rendering” windows. The selection of the wanted image is performed in the “Image Selector” window with a simple click on the image name. The selected line appears then in grey in the list and the selected image is immediately visualized in the “Image Rendering” windows. More information on selected image can be visualized by clicking on the “maximize/restore down” icon in the upper right part of the window (see next image).
From a selected image list, it is possible to remove any image by pressing the “Del” button on the keyboard. It is also possible to use the FILE menu “Erase all ” to remove all patients from the list. In each case, the software asks then a confirmation before removing data from the software.
