The World Summit Award was given to IRCAD (Research Institute for Cancer of the Digestive System) in the e-health category on Wednesday 10th December, during the World Summit on the Information Society organised in the framework of the United Nations. It rewards the Argonaute 3D project developed by IRCAD in partnership with France Télécom.
Argonaute 3D is an experimental application that enables medical professionals – general practitioner, radiologist, surgeon – at different locations to share and work together in realtime using a 3D image that reconstitutes a patient’s clinical data from MRI or CT scans. This analysis allows specialists and referring physicians to determine together the optimal time and strategy for a surgical intervention. Argonaute 3D enables inputs from specialists anywhere in the world as long as they have a broadband DSL link to the Internet.
Argonaute 3D is a totally secure platform, thus guaranteeing complete confidentiality of medical records.
This award was given to IRCAD after a jury had gathered in Dubai last October to examine 800 projects from 136 participating countries. The World Summit Award is a global 3 year project, which seeks to demonstrate concrete benefits of the Information Society in terms of the new qualities in e-content and innovative applications, by selecting, presenting and promoting the best products from all over the world and placing an overall emphasis on closing the content gap.
The World Summit Award was under the high patronage of Mr. Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel, Federal Chancellor of Austria, Mr. Ion Iliescu, President of Romania, de Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, President of Senegal.
