Last November 30, 2009, Professor Jacques Marescaux, Founding Father and President of the IRCAD and Professor Andre Syrota, Chief Director and President of the INSERM, signed an agreement protocol regarding the scientific cooperation between the IRCAD and the INSERM.

The 26th of May 2008, the IRCAD and their partners in this project, Taiwan’s Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, inaugurated the Asia IRCAD Taiwan. This new center for research and training in minimally invasive surgery was conceived as a mirror training institute to the one in Strasbourg.

On April 2nd 2007, at the University Hospital of Strasbourg, Professor Jacques Marescaux and his team successfully performed the first no scar surgery. This first human incisionless operation was carried out using a flexible endoscope for transvaginal removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) in a 30-year-old woman with symptomatic gallstones.
